Running after a break

This year my running has not been as good as it was last year. Last year I was running at least 3 days a week, I had improved my distance and my stamina was constantly improving. This year I started doing other things. I joined new classes, lots of spinning, jumping exercises and I also started weight training in process I lost out on my usual running. I have been doing a few hill sprints but other than that no long distance runs. Somewhere at the back of my mind I was worried about my running stamina being affected but I also was hoping all my other workouts would cover up for the lost runs.
Anyways a few weeks back I decided to go for a run but I could not complete my run as planned. I got side stitches, my speed was not very good and I came back irritated. That’s when I decided I needed to include a few running sessions every week. It took me atleast 5 runs before I could get back to the point where I was last year. I needed a lot of patience because it did feel like a step back for me and it was very frustrating to stop at distance which I could pass comfortably a few months back. I was actually very disappointed with myself but being disappointed and crying about it doesn’t help I had to get up make a new plan that included running and get back out. Now I try to get in 3 running sessions every week.

Does this happen to you? If you replace your run with a different cardio does your running get affected or am I the only one

  1. I am not anywhere near where I was running wise last yearat this time.I've struggled big time over the past year with my running and that is why I joined the gym. To help with my strength and help me improve on it. You are definitely not the only one:-)

  2. I am zero comapred to you regarding fitness.
yet my fast walking was a breeze when I used to do it daily last year.
I did 3 miles today and I was hoping for it to finish. Infact I was feeling like I would pass out.
So ya I think any workout which gets a break takes a while to get back in tune with.

  3. Not being a 'runner' wasn't sure whether to comment but then thought ...why not!

I guess as with anything if we stop using certain muscles, if we haven't done endurance, stamina work outs then yes we are going to struggle.

    But onwards and upwards.......

    All the best Jan

    1. I am always happy to read your comments Jan :) I always assumed because I was spinning and doing jumping exercises I was working the same muscles but I guess there is a difference realized that the first day I went back out for a run..

  4. Hi Tanvee, I am new to your blog, bumped into it when I was blog hopping :))
I used to run (currently on a break post pregnancy) one thing I can tell from my experience, running is like cycling or swimming. When you get back to it after a break its a bit rough the first few days, but then your back to where you left, it takes a few days to get adjusted. So keep going, the other cardio what you have been doing would have helped in increasing your stamina which will in turn help you in running!! Keep running n writing. Cheers. P.S I am from Pune too!

    1. lot of patience I think that's the difficult part...the first I went back running I was so disappointed because of how often I had to stop...the next time I had to push myself out because I was scared I would be disappointed again....

  6. I'm sure by now you know exactly how chaotic my schedule has been lately. Even though I've been exercising regularly, the hardest thing for me has been to see how my endurance/stamina/strength has suffered. All I know is that I just need to keep working at it in order to reach the levels I was before. It's all about being patient (grrrr) ;)
